Writing challenge 2

Can we make it work?

Why did Kari feel this way, if it was so wrong? Her mom told her it was a hormonal thing due to her nearing puberty, but Kari felt that wasn’t the case here. Now 13 years old, Kari Kamiya was soon to enter puberty, and she had already begun feeling different emotions she never felt before; emotions that would normally be directed at the opposite sex. This was not one of those times.

Kari realized this newfound affection during school one day after gym class. She was undressing in the locker room when she caught a glimpse of the other girl’s naked bodies, and how smooth and curvy they were. Kari quickly looked away; her heart racing and a heavy blush appeared on her face. What was wrong with her? She saw girls naked many times before, why did she suddenly feel so flustered?

When Kari got home, she consulted her mom about what happened.

“Don’t read too much into it, Kari.” Mrs. Kamiya replied. “I felt the same way when I was your age. But, as time went on, I got over it; I realized that it was just my overexcited hormones. I met your father, and I realized that my lesbian infatuations didn’t mean anything.”

Kari was still young and her sense of logic was different from prior generations, as she had not been indoctrinated into religious beliefs. She did not understand. Why it was so wrong to pursue a “lez-b-in” relationship, as her mom called it?

Following several more days undressing and redressing in the girl’s locker room at school reinforced Mrs. Kamiya’s statement. Was she right all along, and this was a meaningless effect caused by the first stages of puberty? The answer became very apparent to Kari the following week; she couldn’t have been more wrong.

The next week would be the first time in several months since she last saw any of the Digidestined apart from her brother Tai. Even with their planned reunion, however, a few members of the group were unable to show up. The first and foremost was Joe, who was starting college outside of Tokyo. The second was Cody, who had to manage his grandfather’s store. The ones who did show up were Tai, TK, Matt, Mimi, Sora, Yolei, Davis, Izzy and of course, Kari. They met up at a park near Kari’s school. Their Digimon couldn’t come, as it was a public place and too many prying eyes around them.

“Kari! You don’t look like you’ve aged a bit!” Sora exclaimed, pulling Kari into a tight hug. “How have you been?”

“I’ve been alright.” You’ve seemed to have… grown a bit, yourself.” Kari replied, blushing as she pulled away. Her face pressed up against Sora’s breasts, which budded considerably since they last met. Kari wasn’t yet familiar with the bra sizes since she was still practically flatchested, but she figured Sora was probably a CC cup.

“Yep! And Matt and Tai haven’t been more awestruck at the sight of me!” The two girls shared a brief moment of laughter before Kari moved on to the next person: Izzy.

“Wow, Internet Security is, like the perfect job for you, Izzy.” She responded to his story. “Are you going to stick with that career or what?”

“I want to move onto software development.” Izzy explained. “But I plan to go to College before I do.”

The rest of her conversations with Izzy dissolved into a lengthy discussion of technical moon speak that went far over her head. Eventually, she had to stop the conversation before her brain overloaded and melted. The last person she had yet to speak to was Mimi. They greeted each other with a close hug, as Kari did with the other girls. Like Sora, Mimi’s breasts had gotten bigger since they last met; it made Kari a little jealous.

“So, Kari, have you been scouting for a boyfriend yet?” Mimi asked.

“What?! No!” Kari answered, blushing heavily. Is this what they were going to gab about? “I haven’t been thinking about that!”

“Oh really? Well, once you start looking for a nice boy, just remember that I call dibs on TK!”

“What?! You can’t call dibs on anyone!” Kari argued. “What kind of rule is that?!”

“The number one rule in dating: The Dibs Rule!”

Kari laughed and tried to pull Mimi into an arm lock, but the girl was stronger somehow, and was able to hold her at bay.

“Fine fine! You get to claim the Dibs Rule!” Kari huffed. “But I don’t like it!”

After a few more minutes of chatting, the Digidestined said their goodbyes and left. Kari and Tai left together back to their house. On the way back, Kari had that sensation again that she had in the locker room the other day. She shook her head. Her mind was still going over the conversation between her and Mimi, but for some reason, when it replayed in her mind, there was no sound. In fact, there was no detail other than Mimi. It wasn’t until she got home did Kari discover…

“I like Mimi!” she exclaimed, staring at herself in the mirror. How was this possible? When did it happen? Kari had so many questions about it, but her heart was beginning to assure her that it was right, and to follow that feeling.

The next day, Mimi knocked on the door to TK’s house, and she waited impatiently rocking back and forth on the balls of her feet. TK opened the door and drew his head back in surprise. He was wearing the clothes he was always seen wearing, but he wasn’t wearing his hat. Mimi really loved his short spiked blonde hair, it never made sense to her why he covered it up.

“Mimi?!” he asked. “What are you doing here?”

“Hey, TK.” Mimi said charmingly, leaning forward and making a sexy pose for the younger boy. “Would you like to go out on a date tonight?”

TK blushed heavily and scratched the back of his head. “Umm… well, I appreciate the offer, but…” he took a deep breath, feeling a bit tense about telling her this. “I’m actually in love with Kari.”

Mimi felt shot through the heart. She didn’t know what to say, but she knew the best thing to do was be polite about it.

“A-alright, TK.” She said, trying to hold back her tears. “Well, if it doesn’t work out, umm… well, you know. Bye.” Mimi quickly hurried away before she would break out in tears in front of the younger boy. It really hurt for her to be shot down like that, and she knew the best idea right now was to go home and rest before she did anything stupid.

TK felt very bad shooting down Mimi, but it was the truth. He loved Kari. And right now, he was going over to her house to declare his love to her. He had butterflies in his stomach, but he planned to slowly edge it into small talk, and let it go from there.

“Hey, TK.” Kari greeted when he came knocking at her door. “What are you doing here?”

“I wanted to see if you wanted to hang out.” He answered. TK’s tactic wasn’t going to be as straightforward as Mimi was.

“Sure. Come on inside.” Kari stepped aside to let TK in. The young boy took off his shoes and stepped into her house. It was more or less the same as it always looked.

“So how have things been?” he asked.

“A little strange.” Kari answered, closing the door behind TK. “Strike that. A lot strange.”

            “Really? What happened?”

Kari sat down on the couch, letting out a deep sigh.

            “I think I’m a lesbian.” She said. “Mom says it’s a phase, but I don’t know… doesn’t seem like it.”

TK stared at her in bewilderment. A lesbian? If that was true, it wouldn’t even matter if he asked, he knew the answer would be a no. Or maybe this was a perfect opportunity; she’d go out on a date with him as a “gay test”.

“Really? What made you come to this conclusion?” he asked, sitting down next to the brunette. Kari told him the whole story about what happened that day in gym class, the sensation she felt in her heart. She told him about how after the reunion, she could feel the fixation on Mimi in her heart. TK slowly nodded his head before grinning in a mixture of frustration and humor.

“Oh god, this is hilarious.” He said, laughing softly. “Do you know how ironic this is?”

Kari looked over at him. “No. What are you talking about?”

“Mimi likes me, and… well… I like you, Kari.” TK blushed heavily, finally having confessed to her. Kari blinked in confusion. Did she hear him right?

“Wait, what?” she asked. “You like me?” TK nodded his head.

“And you like Mimi, and Mimi likes me.” He finished. “It’s a funny scenario, isn’t it?”

“Yeah, it kinda is.” Kari leaned back, brooding on what TK just told her. “What do you think should be done?”

“I don’t know. There has to be some kind of compromise.” Both Digidestined pondered on this for several minutes. Finally, TK announced, “I have an idea.”

A knock at Mimi’s door woke her up from her nap. She still felt terrible from the heartbreak, but the nap helped somewhat. Rubbing her eyes, she answered the door to find Kari and her crush, TK.

“What do you two want?” She asked. There was a hint of irritation in her voice.

“Mimi, we need to talk.” TK said. “Can we come inside?”

“Alright.” Mimi let them inside, at least giving them a chance to talk to her.

“Mimi, I wanted to apologize for earlier today.” TK said. “I do realize you really like me, and unless we come together and make some sort of compromise.”

Mimi exchanged looks between the two. “What do you mean?” she asked. Kari stepped forward and slowly grasped Mimi’s hands.

“We talked it over, and it turns out… I really like you, Mimi.”

The eldest Digidestined’s eyes widened and she blushed heavily.

“You… you’re a lesbian, Kari?” the younger brunette nodded her head. TK stepped up next to the two girls.

“And I like Kari.” He added. “I thought it would be nice if we could all be together and love each other.” TK leaned in and kissed Mimi on the lips. Her eyes widened briefly before closing them and leaning into the kiss. The two pulled away, then TK kissed Kari. Mimi felt a little jealous, but his idea was beginning to sound right to her. Finally, Kari kissed Mimi. Her kiss was much more gentle and soothing than TK’s. As the two girls held the kiss, Mimi discovered that she actually enjoyed it! TK grinned as he watched the two girls. Not many guys were as lucky as he was.

“Can we make it work?” she asked after they finally broke the kiss.

“We’ll make it work.” TK answered.
